Batman and Robin is a 1949 serial that pits the crime-fighting duo against a villain called the Wizard, who has built a device capable of controlling machinery. Using this invention, he threatens to bring the city under his control, and Batman and Robin must stop him across the serial's fifteen chapters. Robert Lowery plays Batman, with Johnny Duncan as Robin, while Jane Adams appears as Vicki Vale and Lyle Talbot plays Commissioner Jim Gordon. Don C. Harvey appears as the henchman Nolan, and Ralph Graves as Winslow Harrison in two chapters.
The serial was directed by Spencer Gordon Bennet, who had tackled the same format a year earlier with Superman; this was the next chapter-based adventure he directed after that one. Production was handled by Sam Katzman Productions, and the screenplay is credited to Bob Kane, George H. Plympton and Royal K. Cole. Released on 26 May 1949, the film runs 263 minutes in total across its episodes and belongs to the action, adventure, crime, science fiction and thriller genres.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 46 votes, placing it in the middle range for a serial of its period. The film has not developed a broad modern following, and its reception on TMDB is moderate.
