Short description
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 brings the blue speedster, Knuckles and Tails back together for a new fight. This time the trio faces Shadow, a mysterious rival whose abilities leave them outmatched at every turn. To have any chance of stopping him and protecting the planet, Team Sonic has to look for help in an unexpected place.
Jeff Fowler directed the film, the third entry in the series he has helmed, following Sonic the Hedgehog in 2020 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022, with a fourth instalment set for 2027. Josh Miller, Pat Casey and John Whittington wrote the screenplay, and Neal H. Moritz, Tim Miller and Toru Nakahara produced. Ben Schwartz voices Sonic, alongside Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails and Keanu Reeves as Shadow, while Jim Carrey plays Ivo Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik and James Marsden returns as Tom. The production, a United States and Japan co-production from Paramount, Original Film, Marza Animation Planet and SEGA, cost about 122 million dollars and took roughly 492 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 78,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.6 from a much smaller base of about 3,500. A critics' score of 6.6 from 152 reviews places it slightly below the audience figure on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- Jim Carrey helped create the prosthetics he had to wear for the role of Gerald. While Carrey played one of the characters, the other was dubbed by Brendan Murphy.
- Director Jeff Fowler spoke about a scene showing Gerald, played by Jim Carrey, slowing down his own aging through the use of Shadow needles, but this scene was cut during the film’s editing to avoid slowing down the overall pace. That’s why Gerald secretly takes one of the Shadow needles while Tom Butler’s character is telling the backstory of Shadow.
