Short description
Parker is a professional thief who attempts a massive heist alongside a crew that includes Grofield and Zen. The operation puts the team in the crosshairs of the New York mafia, a South American dictator, and an incredibly wealthy individual. While some accounts suggest the mission is a straightforward gamble for a large prize, others indicate that Parker must first deal with a betrayal by Zen, who attempts to eliminate her partners to keep the loot. This conflict eventually leads Parker to reluctantly rejoin Zen to pursue a high-value relic.
Directed by Shane Black, the film follows his previous work on The Predator. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as Parker, with LaKeith Stanfield, Rosa Salazar, and Keegan-Michael Key in supporting roles. Produced by Team Downey and Amazon MGM Studios, the project operated on a budget of 3 million USD.
Audience reception is mixed but generally positive, with a rating of 6.6/10 on TMDB and 5.9/10 on IMDb from 27,000 votes. These viewers rated the film more favorably than professional critics, who gave it a 5.1/10 based on 64 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, it was assumed that Robert Downey Jr. and Shane Black would work together on this film – they had previously collaborated on the 2005 comedy thriller "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and the 2013 science fiction action film "Iron Man 3" – but for reasons known only to himself, Downey Jr. decided not to star in the project, and was replaced by Mark Wahlberg, while Downey Jr. remained with the production as a producer.
- The criminal syndicate operates under the guise of a company called The Westlake Group. Donald E. Westlake is the author of a series of novels about Parker (played by Mark Wahlberg), one of which served as the basis for this film. Westlake is credited as a screenwriter.
- "Dirty Game" was the original title of the script for the action film "Lethal Weapon 2," written by Shane Black and Warren Murphy. During the filming of "Lethal Weapon 2," the film was noticeably “softened.” Although the original project was rejected by studio executives, Black considered his script for "Lethal Weapon 2" to be his best screenwriting work.
