In Victorian London, Ebenezer Blackadder runs a moustache shop and is widely regarded as the kindest, most generous man in England. His goodwill is so extreme that he gives away nearly everything he owns, especially at Christmas. His villainous ancestors take a dim view of this behaviour, and on Christmas Eve a spirit arrives to show him visions of those disreputable forebears. What he sees prompts him to reconsider his charitable ways.
This is a 43-minute comedy television film made by the BBC, first broadcast in December 1988. Richard Boden directs from a screenplay by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton, with John Lloyd producing. It is a festive spin on the Blackadder sitcom. Rowan Atkinson plays the various Blackadders, Tony Robinson the Baldricks, and Robbie Coltrane the Spirit of Christmas, while Miranda Richardson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie each appear in more than one role.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.9 from around 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from a much smaller number of votes. The wide gap in vote counts reflects how much more heavily the title is logged on the former. The ratings themselves indicate that viewers who seek it out generally regard it as one of the stronger entries in the series.
