House of Darkness

Hap Jackson meets a woman named Mina at a bar and agrees to drive her home. She lives in a large, isolated house, and he takes the invitation to come inside as a sign that the evening is heading somewhere. What begins as flirting grows more unsettling as the night goes on, and Mina may not be as alone in the house as she claims. The visit becomes a dangerous encounter rather than the casual hook-up Hap expected.

Neil LaBute directed and wrote the film, which he also produced with Daryl Freimark and Shaun S. Sanghani. It came out in 2022, the same year as his film Out of the Blue and his tenth directorial credit counting from Nurse Betty in 2000. Justin Long plays Hap, with Kate Bosworth as Mina, and Gia Crovatin and Lucy Walters also appear. The premise recalls LaBute's earlier Some Velvet Morning, another two-hander about a tense encounter between a man and a woman.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 4.7 from around 5,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 from 62 reviews places it somewhat higher than the audience scores, suggesting reviewers responded to it better than general viewers did.
