Set in a small New Mexico town in the late 1980s, Love Lies Bleeding follows Lou, who runs a gym and keeps to herself, and Jackie, a bodybuilder passing through on her way to a competition in Las Vegas. The two begin a relationship, but Lou's family, headed by her father and tied to criminal dealings, draws them into violence that neither can easily escape.
Rose Glass directed and co-wrote the film with Weronika Tofilska, following her debut Saint Maud four years earlier. Kristen Stewart plays Lou, with Katy O'Brian as Jackie, Ed Harris as Lou Sr., Dave Franco as JJ, Jena Malone as Beth and Anna Baryshnikov as Daisy. Andrea Cornwell and Oliver Kassman produced for A24, Film4, Escape Plan and Lobo Films.
Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took roughly 13 million worldwide, a modest return against its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.6 from about 63,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 from around 1,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 270 reviews places professional response noticeably above the audience scores. Running 104 minutes, it blends crime, romance and thriller elements.
