Short description

Detective John Kimble is a hardened Los Angeles cop who goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher in Astoria, Oregon, hoping to find the ex-wife and young son of a drug dealer he helped put on trial. The woman and boy have disappeared, and locating them matters to the case against her former husband. What Kimble does not anticipate is a classroom of unruly five-year-olds who prove harder to manage than the criminals he usually faces. A fellow teacher and her own son gradually help him win the children over, while his partner and a suspicious school principal complicate his cover.

Ivan Reitman directed the comedy, the seventh of the fifteen features he made, arriving between Ghostbusters II and Dave. Arnold Schwarzenegger leads as Kimble, with Penelope Ann Miller as Joyce, Pamela Reed as Phoebe, Linda Hunt as Miss Schlowski, and Richard Tyson and Carroll Baker as the Crisp family. Murray Salem, Herschel Weingrod and Timothy Harris wrote the screenplay, and Brian Grazer and Reitman produced it for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment.

Released in December 1990, the film cost about 15 million dollars and returned roughly 202 million worldwide, a strong multiple of its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from about 175,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from a few thousand. A critics' rating of 5.6 from 39 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place from May 30 to September 4, 1990, in Astoria, Oregon, and on the Universal Studios backlots in California. The school scenes were filmed at John Jacob Astor Elementary School, where the film crew hired local artists to create murals inside, provided new playground equipment, fenced it off, and landscaped fresh lawns and hedges. Since school was already out for the summer by the time principal photography began in June, many students and school staff were able to get small roles or were used as extras.
  • The scene in which Phoebe attempts to pose as German, uttering a string of nonsensical phrases in German, remained unchanged in the dubbed German version, causing considerable confusion among many viewers.
  • The lead role was initially offered to Bill Murray. Another potential candidate was Danny DeVito, who did not get the part because he was too short.
  • The character played by four-year-old Miko Hughes is named Joseph Cousins, which is the same name as one of the young actors who played Dominic (the role was played by twin brothers Joseph Cousins and Christian Cousins).
  • The poem that John Kimball (Arnold Schwarzenegger) reads to the children before bed is "Spring Morning" by the famous British author A.A. Milne.
  • The character of one of the girls, Emma (Sarah Rose Carr), was named after director Ivan Reitman's daughter.
