Lantana is a crime drama centred on Leon Zat, a police detective in a long marriage who is called in when Valerie Somers, a psychologist, goes missing. Valerie had been grieving the murder of her daughter and suspected her husband John of being unfaithful. As Leon works the case, his own life becomes entangled with it: his wife was among Valerie's patients, and he is conducting an affair. Around the investigation, four married couples are drawn into a tangle of suspicion and betrayal in which each partner hides something from the others.
The film was directed by Ray Lawrence, the first of the two features he made, followed by Jindabyne in 2006. Andrew Bovell wrote the screenplay, adapted from his own play, and Jan Chapman produced. Anthony LaPaglia plays Leon, with Geoffrey Rush as John Knox, Barbara Hershey as Valerie Somers, Kerry Armstrong as Sonja Zat, Rachael Blake as Jane O'May and Vince Colosimo as Nick, among a credited cast of 35 and a crew of 48. A German and Australian co-production, it took about 16 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 7.2/10 from around 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7/10 from roughly 233 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9/10 from 105 reviews places it noticeably above the audience scores.
