The Rifleman of the Voroshilov Regiment
Short description
The Rifleman of the Voroshilov Regiment is a 1999 Russian crime drama directed by Stanislav Govorukhin, who wrote the screenplay with Aleksandr Borodyanskiy and Yuri Polyakov. It follows Ivan Afonin, a retired railway worker living quietly with his granddaughter Katya. Three young men from the neighbourhood, who behave as though nothing can touch them, lure Katya to their apartment and rape her. The case is briefly pursued, but the father of one of the attackers is a senior police officer, and the investigation is shut down. After legal avenues fail, Ivan takes justice into his own hands.
Mikhail Ulyanov plays Ivan, with Anna Sinyakina as Katya, Aleksandr Porokhovshchikov as police colonel Pashutin, Vladislav Galkin as a local policeman, Irina Rozanova as Katya's mother and Ilya Drevnov as Vadim Pashutin.
The film was Govorukhin's first feature as director after a long gap in that role; among the films he directed, it precedes In Jazz Style by roughly eleven years. On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from about 5,700 votes, and on TMDB 7.1/10 from around 142 votes, indicating a solid and fairly widely seen response from viewers.

- Aleksey Shevchenkov auditioned for the roles of Igor Zvorygin, Boris Chukhanov, and Vadim Pashutin, but ultimately landed an episodic role as an arms dealer at the market.
- After the assault, the perpetrators watched the film "Doberman" (1997).
- One of the final scenes in the film, where Vadim Pashutin wounds his father, was changed on set at the insistence of law enforcement officials who were consulting on the film. The script originally called for the father to be killed. For this reason, Alexander Porokhovshchikov, who played the role of the police colonel, skipped the film's premiere.
