Sidda Lee Walker is a successful New York playwright who has put distance between herself and her Louisiana hometown, and especially between herself and Vivi, her eccentric mother. When a magazine interview turns into a public airing of their long-running grievances, the rift between them widens. Vivi's three closest friends, a group she has belonged to since their shared girlhood, decide to step in. They take Sidda away from the city and set out to show her the story of her mother's youth, hoping that understanding the past will allow mother and daughter to find each other again. The film is based on Rebecca Wells's novel.
Callie Khouri directed from her own screenplay. It was her first film as a director, followed by Mad Money in 2008 and Patsy & Loretta in 2019. Sandra Bullock plays Sidda, with Ellen Burstyn as Vivi and Ashley Judd as the younger Vivi. Fionnula Flanagan, James Garner and Cherry Jones appear among a credited cast of 46.
The film opened in June 2002 and runs 116 minutes. Made for a budget of 27 million US dollars, it earned around 74 million worldwide, a return that made it a commercial success. Audiences are divided: on IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from 22,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from 265 votes. A critics' rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 143 reviews places it close to, and slightly below, the audience scores.
