Red Sonja

Red Sonja follows a warrior woman whose sister, the guardian of a powerful talisman, is killed when the tyrant Queen Gedren raids the city of Hablac to seize the object for herself. Swearing vengeance, Red Sonja sets out to recover the talisman and confront Gedren. Along the way she is joined by the swordsman Kalidor, a young prince and his servant, and together they travel toward the queen's stronghold to put an end to her plans.

The film was directed by Richard Fleischer, the twenty-third of twenty-three features he made in chronological order, arriving after Conan the Destroyer the previous year. Brigitte Nielsen plays Red Sonja, with Arnold Schwarzenegger as Kalidor, Sandahl Bergman as Queen Gedren, Paul L. Smith as Falkon, Ernie Reyes Jr. as Prince Tarn and Ronald Lacey as Ikol. George MacDonald Fraser and Clive Exton wrote the screenplay, and Dino De Laurentiis and Christian Ferry produced. It was a co-production between the United States, Italy, the Netherlands and the Netherlands Antilles.

Released in April 1985, the film runs eighty-nine minutes. Made for a budget of eighteen million dollars, it returned seven million dollars worldwide. Audience scores sit at 5.1 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly forty-eight thousand votes and 5.4 out of 10 on TMDB from fewer than a thousand. A critics' rating of 4.1 out of 10 from thirty-one reviews places it below even those modest audience figures.
