Igby Goes Down
Short description
Igby Goes Down follows Igby Slocumb, a seventeen-year-old who rejects the wealthy, dysfunctional world he was raised in. His father is schizophrenic, his mother is distant and self-absorbed, and his older brother is driven and conservative. After being sent away from one school too many, Igby ends up in New York, where he falls for Sookie, a young woman with troubles of her own, even as his family keeps pulling him back.
The film marked the directorial debut of Burr Steers, who also wrote the screenplay; his later films include 17 Again, Charlie St. Cloud and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Kieran Culkin plays Igby, with Susan Sarandon as his mother Mimi, Jeff Goldblum as D.H., Claire Danes as Sookie, Jared Harris as Russel and Amanda Peet as Rachel, among a credited cast of twenty-nine. It was produced by Marco Weber and Lisa Tornell for United Artists, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Crossroads Films and Atlantic Streamline, with a budget of nine million dollars and a worldwide box office of five million.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 135 reviews, slightly above its TMDB audience score of 6.6 out of 10 from 359 votes. The gap is small, suggesting general agreement between reviewers and viewers.
