Shoot to Kill

A jewelry store owner is forced to hand over diamonds by a man who has taken his wife hostage. The rescue attempt goes wrong, the kidnapper escapes, and FBI agent Warren Stantin is left to pursue him. The trail leads out of the city and into the forests and mountains of the Pacific Northwest, territory where Stantin has no experience. To keep up the chase he must rely on Jonathan Knox, a tracker who knows the wilderness and who joins the hunt under strain, especially once the man they are following takes a new hostage.

Roger Spottiswoode directed the film, the third of fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Under Fire and preceding Turner & Hooch. Daniel Petrie Jr., Harv Zimmel and Michael Burton wrote the screenplay, with Petrie and Ron Silverman producing for Touchstone Pictures, Silver Screen Partners III and Century Park Pictures. Sidney Poitier plays Stantin, Tom Berenger plays Knox, Kirstie Alley appears as Sarah Renell, and Clancy Brown, Richard Masur and Andrew Robinson are among a credited cast of forty-one.

Released in February 1988, the film runs 109 minutes and mixes action, crime, drama and thriller. It took in about 29 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 15 reviews, while on TMDB it scores 6.6 out of 10 from 279 votes, a smaller and more mixed audience sample.
