The Dinner Guest is a Spanish drama that explores the shared experience of grief across different eras. The story follows two young people, Fernando and Icíar, who both face the traumatic loss of a parent. Fernando lives in 1977 Bilbao and deals with the kidnapping of his father by the organization ETA, while Icíar lives in 2011 Navarra and faces her mother's rapid decline due to cancer. Because they exist in different time periods, they are unable to support one another or share their methods of coping with their respective tragedies.
The film was directed by Ángeles González-Sinde, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Gabriela Ybarra. In the chronological order of her work, this production follows Madrid 11-M: todos íbamos en ese tren from 2005 and precedes Después de Kim from 2026. The cast features Susana Abaitua as Icíar, Ginés García Millán and Fernando Oyagüez as the father at different ages, Adriana Ozores as the mother, Iñaki Miramón as the grandfather, and Estrella Alonso as Elena. The movie has a runtime of 100 minutes and was released on August 8, 2024.
