Emilia Pérez

Emilia Pérez centres on Rita, a lawyer at a large Mexican firm whose work consists less of serving justice than of keeping criminals out of prison. Her skills attract the attention of a cartel boss, Juan Del Monte, known as Manitas, who wants to leave his criminal life behind and disappear for good. To achieve that, he plans to live as the woman he has always felt himself to be, Emilia Pérez, and Rita is the one who must help him make the transition and cover his tracks. The film mixes crime drama with musical numbers as it follows the consequences of that arrangement.

Jacques Audiard directs and wrote the screenplay, working with producers Pascal Caucheteux and Valérie Schermann. It is the eighth feature he directed, following Paris, 13th District. The cast is led by Zoe Saldaña as Rita, Karla Sofía Gascón as Emilia and Manitas, Selena Gomez as Jessi, Adriana Paz as Epifanía, Edgar Ramírez as Gustavo Brun and Mark Ivanir as Wasserman. The production involved companies in Belgium, Mexico, the United States and France and cost about 26 million USD, while its worldwide box office came to roughly 16 million USD.

Audience response has been modest. On IMDb it holds 5.3 out of 10 from about 113,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from around 2,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 286 reviews places professional appraisal somewhat above the viewer scores on both platforms.
