Reality

Reality dramatizes the June 3, 2017 arrest of Reality Winner, a former United States Air Force member and National Security Agency translator living in Augusta, Georgia. After running errands, she returns home and is met by two men who turn out to be federal agents. What follows is an extended interrogation built around the report she is accused of leaking to an online news outlet, which concerned Russian interference in the 2016 American presidential election. The film stays largely within that encounter, turning a single afternoon of questioning into a tense exchange about what she did and why.

Tina Satter directed and co-wrote the screenplay with James Paul Dallas, adapting the stage production she had created from the real interrogation transcript. It was her first feature film. Sydney Sweeney plays Winner, with Josh Hamilton and Marchánt Davis as the two agents, Benny Elledge as a third man present in the house, and John Way as another FBI agent. Archive footage of the real Winner also appears. She and Satter came to the project after working together in the theatre world.

Released in June 2023, the film runs eighty-three minutes and was made as a co-production between the United Kingdom, the United States and France. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from roughly thirty thousand votes, and on TMDB a 6.4 from a much smaller number of voters. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 105 reviews places it noticeably above both audience scores, suggesting reviewers responded more strongly than general viewers did.
