The role originally intended for Nicole Kidman was offered to Demi Moore, but she declined to take it.
After unsuccessful test screenings, the film underwent significant revisions – unnecessary plotlines were removed and some scenes were completely reshot.
Working on the project was fraught with numerous difficulties, and rumors repeatedly circulated about disagreements between director Frank Oz and actresses Nicole Kidman and Bette Midler. In several interviews, Kidman, Matthew Broderick, and producer Scott Rudin expressed regret for getting involved with the project. It was even claimed that Kidman almost left the cast at one point due to constant script rewrites. Oz also repeatedly expressed regret about his involvement in the project, admitting that he had made too many mistakes in his own opinion, trying to please both studio executives and the audience, and as a result, made a very mediocre film.
According to the original script, Walter was supposed to fix Joanna.
