The Stepford Wives

Joanna Eberhart, a high-powered television executive, loses her job and suffers a breakdown. To recover, she and her husband Walter leave New York for the Connecticut town of Stepford, where life at first appears flawless. Joanna befriends Bobbie Markowitz, a writer as sharp-tongued as she is, and together they grow suspicious of the town's wives, who seem uniformly cheerful, well-groomed and compliant. Their husbands belong to a secretive men's association led by Mike Wellington, and Joanna becomes determined to learn what the town and its perfect women are hiding. The film is a comic thriller adapted from Ira Levin's novel, also the basis of a 1975 film.

Frank Oz directed, working from a screenplay by Paul Rudnick. It was Oz's eleventh feature, arriving between The Score and Death at a Funeral in a run that began with The Dark Crystal. Nicole Kidman plays Joanna, with Matthew Broderick as Walter, Bette Midler as Bobbie, Glenn Close as Claire Wellington and Christopher Walken as Mike Wellington.

Made for about 90 million dollars, the film returned roughly 102 million worldwide, a modest result against its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from around 73,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from far fewer. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 175 reviews places it below even the audience scores.
