Janice LaRue is barely holding herself together. Her teenage son, Eric, shot and killed three classmates in a school shooting, and Janice now drifts through her days numb and consumed by anger she cannot release. Her husband, Ron, has turned to a new church for comfort, but Janice cannot find the same relief in faith. Her pastor keeps urging her to meet with the mothers of the boys Eric killed, and she must also face visiting her son in prison. Released in April 2025, the film is a drama running just under two hours.
Eric LaRue is directed by Michael Shannon, working from a screenplay by Brett Neveu, and marks a shift into feature directing for an actor better known for his screen performances. Judy Greer leads the cast as Janice, with Alexander Skarsgård as Ron, Alison Pill, Tracy Letts, Paul Sparks and Annie Parisse among the supporting players.
The film draws modest audience attention: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.5 from 291 votes, which suggests a small viewership and a mixed response rather than broad acclaim. It sits as a low-profile independent drama built around a difficult subject, carried by its performers rather than by scale or spectacle.
