What's left behind the scenes
- Doctors in the US began sterilizing Native American women in the 1930s, and the process became widespread following the passage of a special law by Congress in 1970, for which funding was specifically allocated. Sterilizations were carried out due to fears of global overpopulation and increasing social welfare costs, which strained both federal and local budgets.
