What's left behind the scenes

  • The Marsten house shown in the series was, in reality, a full-scale facade mockup attached to a small house that already stood on top of the hill. Constructing the facade cost the creators $100,000. In 1979, that amount of money could have built an entire house (including interior finishing).
  • It was initially intended that Warner Bros. would make a feature film from Stephen King's bestseller. Producer Stirling Silliphant and screenwriters Robert Getchell and Larry Cohen tried to 'compress' the material into two hours of screen time, but the results of these attempts were unsatisfactory. Ultimately, the project remained with Warner Bros., where producer Richard Kobritz decided it would be better to make it into a mini-series.
  • The prototype for the character of Kurt Barlow was Count Orlok from the horror film "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror."
  • The scenes in which vampire children hover outside the windows of their victims were partially filmed in reverse for greater effect. Additionally, the children were not suspended by wires, but were filmed using a jib crane.
  • According to director Tobe Hooper, the makeup for Reggie Nalder, who played Barlow, had to be constantly touched up. In particular, filming the final scene with Barlow in the coffin took a very long time.
