What's left behind the scenes
- The filming of "The Vampire Diaries" took place concurrently with the filming of the new installment of the Twilight saga, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," and the actors from both projects stayed in the same hotel.
- The stone in the rings worn by Damon and Stefan is lapis lazuli.
- Initially, Zach Roerig, Michael Trevino, and Paul Wesley auditioned for the role of Damon Salvatore; they subsequently landed the roles of Matt, Tyler, and Stefan, respectively.
- Canadian actress Neve Campbell auditioned for the role of Isabella Fleming.
- James Van Der Beek was originally intended for the role of Alaric.
- Ashley Simpson was considered for the roles of Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce. The role eventually went to actress Nina Dobrev.
- Torrey DeVitto (who ended up playing Dr. Meredith Fell) and Alexandra Chando also auditioned for the role of Elena.
- Actress and singer Ashley Tisdale was invited to audition for the role of Elena, but she declined.
- Stephen Amell (who played the werewolf Brady in the second season) auditioned for the roles of Mason Lockwood and Elijah Mikaelson.
- In episode 1.07, Vicki Donovan's driver's license is shown, according to which she was born on August 20, 1991, and the document was issued in 2000, meaning she was nine years old at the time.
- In episode 1.13, in an 1864 flashback, Renoir's painting 'Girls at the Piano' is hanging in Katherine's room, despite it not being painted until 1892.
- In episode 3.15, Elijah mentions that a thousand years ago, the area of the current forest was a meadow where wild horses grazed. However, there were no wild or domestic horses in the Americas until colonists brought them from Europe in the 16th century.
- In the fifth season of the series, Katherine possesses Elena's body, and everyone believes she has died. However, since Bonnie is the anchor to the Other Side, she should have noticed that Katherine wasn't dead.
