What's left behind the scenes

  • In the original version of the script, there was no character named Maddy Ferguson (Laura Palmer's cousin, played by the same actress, Sheryl Lee). David Lynch was so impressed by Sheryl's performance as Laura Palmer that he wanted to continue working with her on new episodes.
  • As part of the project's promotion, a 1991 calendar featuring stills from Twin Peaks was prepared; however, it was never released to the market due to Sheryl Fenn's photo shoot for Playboy magazine.
  • David Lynch and Mark Frost planned to adapt a biography of Marilyn Monroe titled 'Goddess.' However, after unsuccessful attempts to acquire the necessary rights, they abandoned the idea, managing to incorporate some of their developments into the plot of the cult series. Thus, Marilyn became the prototype for Laura Palmer.
  • A rather unusual technique was used during the recording of some scenes. The actors learned their lines backward. The resulting voice recordings were then played in reverse, which produced articulate speech.
  • The series takes place in the fictional town of Twin Peaks in northwestern Washington state, near the Canadian border. At the time of filming, the town's population was 5,120. With a slight nudge from the ABC network, the on-screen population of the town was increased tenfold to 51,201.
  • During production, several scenes were filmed exploring the relationship between James Hurley (played by James Marshall) and his mother, but they were ultimately not included in the series.
  • The pilot episode of the series is two hours long. Later, this episode was split into two parts. In European countries, the pilot was screened in cinemas.
  • A scandal erupted in Germany during the series' broadcast. The RTL channel, which had purchased the broadcasting rights, canceled the show at the 21st episode. This was the result of a mean-spirited campaign organized by a competing channel, SAT.1, which revealed the identity of Laura Palmer's killer on air before the first episode had even premiered.
  • To make it easier for viewers to distinguish which persona Sheryl Lee was portraying, it was decided that Maddy Ferguson would be a brunette (in contrast to the blonde Laura Palmer).
  • In the seventh episode, someone attacks Jacoby—a mystery that remains unsolved. However, according to Mark Frost, this individual is the one who killed Laura Palmer.
  • Kyle MacLachlan, who played FBI Agent Dale Cooper, refused to develop his character's romantic storyline with Audrey Horne (Sheryl Lee), arguing that an honest FBI agent would never allow himself to have a relationship with an underage girl.
  • To prevent information leaks, several versions of the scene depicting Madeleine Ferguson's murder were filmed. In one of them, for example, Ben Horne was the killer. However, this scene was never shown to the public, neither on television nor in any version of the video releases.
  • The killer Bob was added to the script during filming. Frank Silva was working as a set decorator, and David Lynch noticed him while filming a scene in Laura Palmer's bedroom as he was moving furniture. Following this, Frank Silva was offered the role, although Lynch admitted he had no clear idea for the character at the time.
