What's left behind the scenes

  • In 1990, the Antenne 2 channel decided to cancel the series "Commissaire Maigret" (1967-1990) starring Jean Richard. The decision was explained by the fact that there were not many of Georges Simenon's works left that were suitable for adaptation. Approximately 10 months after the series ended, Richard learned from the newspapers that the channel planned to launch a new project with a different actor in the role of Maigret. The rights to Simenon's novels and short stories were acquired at the time by producer Robert Nador, who decided to "refresh" the main character. Initially, the role of Maigret was offered to Julien Guiomar, but he was busy with another police series and declined the offer. They then approached Bruno Cremer, who, after careful consideration, agreed to star in several television films.
  • The series is set in the 1950s. In 1991, the television company La Cinq served as a co-producer for the first season (this decision was made, in part, for financial reasons); however, the company later went bankrupt, and the series never aired on that channel. Other producers included the Czech company Esk Televize, as well as the French-speaking RTBF and TSR from Belgium and Switzerland respectively, and the Finnish channel Yle TV1. To save costs, the project was filmed in Czechoslovakia, Finland, Portugal, and South Africa.
  • Bruno Cremer had throat cancer, so he consumed almost no alcohol in the final episode. It was even decided to record his lines in a studio so that he could later dub himself on screen, but unfortunately, it never came to that. In the final episode, Cremer's voice was dubbed by Belgian actor Vincent Grass.
