What's left behind the scenes
- A 'bottle dungeon' is a type of underground prison common in medieval castles and fortresses. The name refers to the shape of the cells, which were often cylindrical or bottle-shaped. In French, they were called 'oubliettes' (from the French 'oublier', meaning 'to forget'). Prisoners were left there to die of thirst and hunger, and everyone forgot about them, hence the name.
