What's left behind the scenes
- A significant portion of the forest scenes were filmed at a former East German army training ground near Berlin.
- The tattoo on the back of the character played by Marc Wasche and the image in the local hospital is the so-called "Emerald Tablet" (according to one popular version, it contains the recipe for creating the philosopher's stone).
- The book belonging to Tannhaus, played by Christian Steyer, depicts a Penrose triangle (one of the primary impossible figures, also known as the "impossible triangle" or "tribar"). The figure gained widespread fame after the publication of a 1958 article in the "British Journal of Psychology" by English psychiatrist Lionel Penrose (1898–1972), co-authored with his son, mathematician and Nobel laureate in physics Roger Penrose. In a 2005 article for "Discover" magazine, Roger Penrose outlined his own interpretation of quantum mechanics, which is what Tannhaus discusses during his lecture in Season 3. (An impossible figure is a figure depicted on a plane that creates a 3D effect but cannot be recreated in reality because it is geometrically incorrect and is not perceived by the human brain as a possible real object.)
- Initially, Netflix approached showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese with a proposal to create a series based on their own sci-fi thriller "Who Am I" (2014). They did not find this proposal interesting and instead suggested something entirely new—a project inspired by the series "The Missing" (2014–2016) and films about time travel. The merger of these two concepts resulted in the series "Dark" (2017–2020).
- The scenes near the cave were filmed near the village of Saarmund in Brandenburg, Germany. Moraines, or glacial deposits, are common in that area, but there are no natural caves, so the cave for filming had to be excavated. It was made only slightly over 9 meters deep.
- Mickey's skeleton costume is a reference to Richard Kelly's sci-fi thriller Donnie Darko (2001), which also explores the theme of time travel.
