What's left behind the scenes

  • Additional scenes were filmed for each two-part episode of the series to turn them into feature films. These films were released first in Europe and then in the USA. Their titles are: 'Catch a Spy' (Don Medford, 1964), 'The Spy with My Face' (John Newland, 1965), 'One Spy Is Too Many' (Joseph Sargent, 1966), 'One of Our Spies Is Missing' (E. Darrell Hullenbeck, 1966), 'The Spy in the Green Hat' (Joseph Sargent, 1967), 'The Killer Karateka' (Barry Sheer, 1967), 'Spies on Helicopters' (Boris Sagal, 1968), and 'How to Steal the World' (Sutton Rowley, 1968).
  • The name Illya Kuryakin was borrowed from a Broadway play written and directed by Jules Dassin (1911-2008). The play was a musical reimagining of his own previous film 'Never on Sunday' (1960). Ironically, Kuryakin is Russian, while Dassin himself was blacklisted as a 'communist' during the McCarthy era.
  • Initially, it was intended to name the series 'Solo' after the surname of one of the main characters; however, in the year of its premiere, the third Bond film, 'Goldfinger' (Guy Hamilton, 1964), was released, which featured a crime syndicate leader with the surname Solo.
  • The main characters' service weapons were German Walther P38 9mm semi-automatic pistols in various configurations—with optics, silencers, shoulder stocks, etc. Together with the special sound effect accompanying every shot, this made the weapons look very impressive.
  • Stunts during filming were typically performed twice—first by actors Robert Vaughn (1932-2016) and David McCallum, and then by professional stunt doubles. The take deemed more successful was used. It is known that McCallum was afraid of heights and Vaughn did not particularly like water, so the actors tried to avoid performing these specific stunts.
  • In the middle of the third season, the show's creators decided to change its style and add humor. The show's ratings plummeted instantly. At the start of the fourth season, an attempt was made to return to a serious narrative, but this did not help, and the series was finally canceled midway through the season.
  • In the pilot episode, which was filmed in color but never released, the head of the organization 'U.N.C.L.E.' was called Mr. Allison and was played by Will Cullenby (1917-1990). The version that was released was in black and white, in which the scenes with Cullenby were reshot. The head of the organization was now called Mr. Waverly, played by Leo G. Carroll.
