Short description

Set in Texas, this animated series follows the life of propane salesman Hank Hill, who lives with his overly confident substitute Spanish teacher wife Peggy, wannabe comedian son Bobby, and naive niece Luanne. Hank has conservative views about God, family, and country, but his values and ethics are often challenged by the situations he, his family, and his beer-drinking neighbors/buddies find themselves in.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The character Bill Dauterive owes his surname to screenwriter Jim Dauterive.
  • Peggy's favorite song is Gloria Estefan's 1987 hit 'Can't Stay Away From You'.
  • Brittany Murphy (1977-2009) voiced both Louanna and young Joseph. Once Joseph grew up, he was voiced by Breckin Meyer.
  • Almost every episode shows Hank, Dale, Bill, and Boomhauer drinking beer. The show's creator, Mike Judge, referred to this quartet as a "Greek chorus."
  • The character Hank Hill is based on Tom Anderson from the animated series Beavis and Butt-Head (1993-1997, 2011), who acted and spoke exactly like Hank.
  • The character named Stuart Dooley is based on the teenager Beavis and Butt-Head's Butt-Head.
  • The voice of the character Jeffrey Boomhauer is based on the voice of an angry viewer of Beavis and Butt-Head, who left a message on the answering machine of Mike Judge, the director and creator of King of the Hill.
  • Regardless of the episode or character, whenever a book is read in the series, it is invariably the book "Onion Lunch." It first appears in the episode where Peggy and Hank join a book club.
  • In the credits of several early seasons, Stephen Root's name is not mentioned. This is because he was starring in the series "NewsRadio" (1995-1999) at the time and, according to his contract, could not be credited in a project for another network. "NewsRadio" was canceled in 1999, and the actor's name immediately appeared in the credits of "King of the Hill" (1997-2010).
  • The name of Bill Dauterive's ex-wife is a reference to the poem 'The Raven' by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849).
  • In the 22nd episode of the 3rd season, "Death and Taxes," the name Alex DeLarge appears among the prison guards. This is a reference to the main character of Stanley Kubrick's dystopian film "A Clockwork Orange" (1971).
  • In the episode with the pig at the fair, the pig's most difficult trick was called the "Johnny Cash." The pig had to jump through a flaming hoop. This is a reference to the American singer and performer Johnny Cash (1932-2003), whose repertoire included the song "Ring of Fire."
  • Mr. Strickland's car horn plays the melody of the folk song "Yellow Rose of Texas."
  • Neither the town of Arlen nor Heimlich County in the state of Texas actually exist.
  • The character Lucky Kleinschmidt was voiced by Tom Petty (1950-2017) and conceived by producer John Altshuler. He wanted someone in the series who 'looked like a Tom Petty who hadn't made it in life.' This is why Petty was asked to voice the character, and he agreed.
