What's left behind the scenes

  • The main character's Black housekeeper, Florida Evans, became so popular with viewers that after two seasons, she received her own show—'Good Times'.
  • Rue McClanahan was anxious about participating in the series, as she had not previously considered herself a comedic actress. The fear of failing to make the audience laugh even led her to visit a psychiatrist.
  • Bill Macy later stated that the primary reason for the series ending was Beatrice Arthur's difficult divorce from her husband. Distraught, the actress wanted to wrap up the show as quickly as possible.
  • Maude first appeared in two episodes of the sitcom 'All in the Family' as the protagonist's cousin. The character and Beatrice Arthur's performance made such a strong impression on the president of CBS that he immediately requested a spin-off show about her from screenwriter Norman Lear.
  • The sitcom was known for tackling topics unusual for 1970s television, such as alcoholism and drug dependency. In one of the most controversial episodes, Maude decides to terminate an unwanted pregnancy; the episode aired two months before the legalization of abortion in the country.
  • In the first season, Rue McClanahan appeared as Vivian wearing a grey wig and aging makeup to look the same age as the main character, as there was a 12-year age difference between Rue and Beatrice Arthur. In subsequent seasons, as Vivian appeared more frequently, the actress refused to be artificially aged, and her noticeable rejuvenation was addressed in an episode about face-lifts.
