Short description

What's left behind the scenes

The series was filmed in front of a live studio audience. This was a fairly common practice for sitcoms in the 1980s and 1990s, but this technique has now been practically forgotten.
David Cohen, Max Munchnik, and James Burrows (the writers and director) considered several candidates for the role of Sybil Schneiderman before casting Linda Lavin. Lavin flatly refused to play a typical elderly character. During filming, she revealed that she had lung cancer, but said that the doctors were optimistic. Unfortunately, the actress passed away suddenly shortly thereafter.
Nathan Lee Graham was cast as Arthur after screen tests with Nathan Lane (who played Bunny Schneiderman). In front of the camera, they had instant chemistry, understanding each other perfectly.
