What's left behind the scenes
- The series was filmed in front of a live studio audience. This was a fairly common practice for sitcoms in the 1980s and 1990s, but this technique has now been practically forgotten.
- Nathan Lee Graham was cast as Arthur after screen tests with Nathan Lane (who played Bunny Schneiderman). In front of the camera, they had instant chemistry, understanding each other perfectly.
- David Cohen, Max Munchnik, and James Burrows (the writers and director) considered several candidates for the role of Sybil Schneiderman before casting Linda Lavin. Lavin flatly refused to play a typical elderly character. During filming, she revealed that she had lung cancer, but said that the doctors were optimistic. Unfortunately, the actress passed away suddenly shortly thereafter.
