Short description

The Killing is a Danish police procedural set in the Copenhagen main police department and revolves around Detective Inspector Sarah Lund and her team, with each season series following a different murder case day-by-day and a one-hour episode covering twenty-four hours of the investigation. The series is noted for its plot twists, season-long storylines, dark tone and for giving equal emphasis to the story of the murdered victim's family alongside the police investigation. It has also been singled out for the photography of its Danish setting, and for the acting ability of its cast.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Throughout the production of the first season, the actors received the script literally every day right before stepping onto the set. The series creator, Søren Sveistrup, flatly refused to tell the actors which of them was the killer. Only Sofie Gråbøl knew that it was not her character.
  • The title of the series ("Forbrydelsen") is translated from Danish not as "The Killing," but as "The Crime."
  • Sofie Gråbøl (who played Sarah Lund) insisted on playing an unsociable character, but she struggled to capture the emotionless nature of Lund until it occurred to her that all her acquaintances fitting that description were men. As a result, she began to act "like a man" and successfully nailed the role.
