During the opening credits, while Louis is in the pizzeria, a passerby flips the middle finger at the camera. This happened spontaneously, but the series creator Louis C.K. decided it was a good omen and chose not to remove the indecency from the frame.
Before casting David Lynch, Louis C.K. considered Ben Gazzara (1930-2012), Jerry Lewis (1926-2017), Woody Allen, Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola for the role.
Susan Kelechi Watson was cast as the protagonist's ex-wife, even though, unlike Louis's children, she is African American. The series creator and director was so impressed by her performance during the screen tests that he cast her regardless of her background and skin color.
Pamela Adlon was unable to participate in the filming of the third season as she was busy working on the series Californication (2007-2014).
