What's left behind the scenes

  • Will Arnett has admitted that the role of BoJack (whom he voiced) was the most challenging of his career.
  • Amy Sedaris can't stand tongue twisters, which is why she was given more of them than any other character.
  • The first season received mostly mixed reviews, evidently because in many cases, reviews were based on watching only the first few episodes, whereas the series became deeper and darker around the middle of the first season. The changes were so significant that the website Indiewire changed its rating system and began evaluating series by season rather than by the first few episodes.
  • Margo Martindale initially did not know that the world in which the series takes place was inhabited by both humans and anthropomorphic animals. After recording the first episode, she told Will Arnett that she enjoyed the recording, and that for some reason, Mr. Podkhvost's mannerisms reminded her very much of a dog.
  • Naomi Watts was one of the first to agree to play herself. Andrew Garfield and Cameron Crowe declined the offer.
  • Daniel Radcliffe appeared as a guest star in the first episode of the second season, playing himself.
  • The series depicts real-life entertainment stars, who were asked to voice themselves. Some were unable or unwilling to do so, and in those cases, their on-screen incarnations invariably met a sad end. For example, the on-screen Andrew Garfield fell and broke every bone in his body.
