What's left behind the scenes

  • The character of Marnie is based on Audrey Gelman, a friend of the series creator Lena Dunham. Gelman even appeared in the show, playing Marnie's rival.
  • The names of all four protagonists are alliterative: Hannah Horvath, Marnie Michaels, Shoshanna Shapiro, and Jessa Johansson.
  • Lena Dunham had to persuade Jemima Kirke to play the role of Jessa. Kirke was not particularly interested in cinema, considering herself an artist rather than an actress.
  • Between the 3rd and 4th seasons, Adam Driver had to fly regularly between New York and London, where he was filming Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) for J.J. Abrams.
  • The green light to film the 4th season was received just two days before the premiere of the 3rd.
  • All the lead actresses grew up in celebrity families. Lena Dunham was born to photographer and designer Laurie Simmons and artist Carroll Dunham. Jemima Kirke's parents are fashion designer Lorraine Kirke (Dellal) and drummer Simon Kirke. Zazie Beetz's father is writer David Mamet, and her mother is actress Lindsay Kours. Allison Williams was born to NBC news anchor Brian Williams and producer Jane Gilliard Stoddard.
  • From time to time, Allison Williams' father would visit the set to see his daughter at work.
  • After being criticized in the press for casting only white actors in the first season of the series, Lena Dunham created a role specifically for Donald Glover.
  • Allison Williams' contract includes a clause stating that she would not be required to film scenes involving full frontal nudity.
  • It wasn't just the actors in the series who had famous relatives. The music was composed by Sean Penn's brother, and three episodes were directed by the son of Martin Peretz, publisher of the liberal magazine The New Republic. Audrey Gelman, who appeared in two episodes, served as Hillary Rodham Clinton's press secretary and later became the press representative for the Borough President of Manhattan.
  • Dakota Johnson once came in for a casting call. Although she didn't get a role in the series, Judd Apatow suggested she audition for a part in the romantic comedy 'What If' (directed by Nicholas Stoller, 2012).
  • The credits for Season 4, Episode 4 list Andrew Rannells, who actually never appears on screen. This is the only instance in the series' history where an actor is credited despite not appearing in the episode.
  • Christopher Abbott, who played the role of Charlie, left the project before the filming of Season 3 due to creative differences with director Lena Dunham. His departure explains the abrupt end of the relationship between Charlie and Marnie.
