What's left behind the scenes

  • In the first episode of the first season, Gwen Cooper's husband is watching a TV series and says, "Look, this guy found his sister." This is a reference to The X-Files (1993-2002), where one of the plotlines involved Fox Mulder's search for his missing sister.
  • The resurrection gloves used by Torchwood staff in the first two seasons are most likely of Gallifreyan origin and are an invention of the Time Lords. In the 'Doctor Who' (2005) special 'The End of Time', Rassilon uses an identical glove.
  • In the fourth episode of the fourth season, Captain Jack Harkness introduces himself to Nicholas Frumkin as John Smith (an alias frequently used by the Doctor).
  • Prior to Torchwood, Eve Myles appeared in the Doctor Who (2005) episode "The Unquiet Dead," playing Gwyneth, a medium and servant who died in that same episode. In the episode "End of Days," the Doctor asked Gwen about her family history, noting that she looked like Gwyneth.
  • In the sixth episode of the second season, an article titled "New Mayor, New Cardiff" is hanging on the door, which is a reference to the eleventh episode of the first season featuring the Ninth Doctor.
  • In the third episode of the fourth season, "Deep Night," when the characters find a medical supply warehouse, Jack says, "It's bigger on the inside." This is a reference to the TARDIS, the Doctor's ship, which is much larger on the inside than on the outside.
  • The vehicle used by the Torchwood staff is a modified Land Rover Range Rover.
  • Toshiko Sato works as a computer specialist at Torchwood. However, she appears in the episode "Aliens of London" from the first season of the revived "Doctor Who" series (2005) as a medical worker at Albion Hospital examining an "alien" body, despite the plot stating she has no medical education. In the thirteenth episode of the second season, Toshiko mentions this, saying that during her second week on the job, she had to fill in for Owen and pretend to be a doctor during the "space pig" case.
  • In the twelfth episode of the first season, "Captain Jack Harkness," "Vote for Saxon" posters are visible on the door of an abandoned dance hall, which is a reference to Doctor Who (2005). The Master ran for Prime Minister of the United Kingdom under the name Harold Saxon.
  • In Captain Jack Harkness's office, 3D glasses occasionally appear hanging from a lamp; these are the glasses the Doctor wore to see the "void" (Season 2, Episode 13).
