What's left behind the scenes

  • According to Joss Whedon, he became eager to create this series after reading Michael Shaara's novel 'The Killer Angels'.
  • The literal translation of 'Firefly' is 'Svetlyachok'. The Firefly-class transport is named as such because the rear section of the ship glows brightly during acceleration, vaguely resembling a firefly.
  • The full name of the Alliance is the 'Anglo-Chinese Alliance.' According to Joss Whedon, the Alliance consists of the USA and China, the last of the global superpowers. This, in turn, explains why characters occasionally speak Chinese. Various inscriptions in the language can also be seen on the ship. Notably, the characters almost always prefer to swear in Chinese. The Alliance flag, which can be seen in the pilot episode, is a combination of the US and Chinese flags.
  • The interior sets of 'Serenity' were built full-scale; almost all the rooms were interconnected exactly as shown in the series. The designers only separated the upper and lower decks, building a separate filming set for each.
  • The armor worn by the Alliance soldiers in the series is surplus prop gear from Paul Verhoeven's film 'Starship Troopers' (1997).
  • 'Firefly' was the first television project for which nearly exclusive special effects were developed to simulate handheld camera filming: slight shaking, zooms, manual focusing, and so on.
  • After the series was cancelled, Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres, and Nathan Fillion appeared in other Joss Whedon projects: Adam and Gina appeared in the series 'Angel' (1999-2004), and Nathan in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' (1997-2003). All three played villains.
  • Captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds ranked 18th on TV Guide magazine's list of the '25 Greatest Sci-Fi Legends'.
  • Rebecca Gayheart was considered for the role of Inara.
  • Before 'Firefly', Summer Glau had already appeared in one of Joss Whedon's projects, playing a role in an episode of the series 'Angel' (1999-2004). Joss remembered her and later cast her as River.
  • It was originally intended that the crew of 'Serenity' would consist of five people. However, during pre-production, the number of main characters increased to nine.
  • Many minor characters, or characters who are mentioned in conversation but never appear on screen, are named after famous science fiction writers. For example, Buster (the first engineer on Serenity) is Alfred Bester, Brennert is Alan Brennert, and Ellison is Harlan Ellison.
  • Between takes, the actors preferred to stay on the ship's sets rather than in their trailers or dressing rooms.
  • During filming, whenever the actors forgot their lines or mispronounced them, they would shout Summer Glau's name. It all started when Summer forgot her lines during the filming of a complex scene. The joke continued during the filming of "Serenity" (2005).
  • Fox network executives decided to cancel the series because they considered it too dark, and Joss Whedon refused to soften the storyline.
  • Joss Whedon originally wrote the character of Mal Reynolds for Nicholas Brendon. However, Nicholas was unable to participate in the series due to his commitment to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997-2003).
  • Alan Tudyk admitted that in the cockpit, Wash always flipped the same overhead switches. Alan jokingly called these switches 'magic'—claiming they could do anything.
  • For the scenes where Mal rides a horse, regardless of which planet the action takes place on, the same horse named Fred was always used.
  • In the episode 'Trash,' when Cobb and Kaylee attempt to reprogram the container, the Windows XP operating system can be seen on its panel.
  • In the 13th episode, at the 35-minute mark, a blue-eyed doll is clearly visible in the villain's arms instead of a live baby.
