What's left behind the scenes

  • In the early stages of the project (1979-1986), a former prisoner was hired as a script consultant. Soon after, however, he died from a gunshot wound during a bank robbery.
  • Working on the project was fraught with numerous problems. Although the series speaks candidly about what happens in correctional facilities, the creators were still criticized by members of the penitentiary system. The creators attempted to hire a retired prison guard as a consultant, but they were unsuccessful. All inquiries to the relevant Australian government agencies and requests for a consultant went unanswered. The series was banned from being shown in prisons across the country. A scandal also erupted regarding one of the characters (a murderer in real life), which led to legal proceedings, and the Network 10 television channel refused to broadcast the series finale for an entire year.
