What's left behind the scenes

  • One of the reasons Jane Krakowski agreed to take part in the project was the idea that she would both act and sing. This is a rarity for modern sitcoms. "Studio 60" is the first such series since the sitcom "Ally McBeal" (1997-2002).
  • Tina Fey conceived almost all of the series' main characters herself, with the exception of Jenna.
  • Jon Hamm auditioned for the role of Jack Donaghy, but the part eventually went to Drew.
  • The costume designer in the fictional show was played by Tom Brecker, the costume designer for the series.
  • Due to a strike by the Writers Guild of America, the second season ended up being shorter than the first (15 episodes versus 21).
  • Initially, Tina Fey planned a series about a cable television producer and a right-wing expert who hosts one of the shows. These roles would have gone to Rachel Dratch and Alec Baldwin. However, NBC executives insisted on a series based on Fey's experience as the head writer of the variety show "Saturday Night Live."
  • The series was shot on film rather than digital.
  • Instead of alcohol, Jack drinks iced tea on screen.
  • Before playing Tom in the series, Will Forte appeared in the first season episode "Black Tie" as Thomas, the personal assistant to Austrian Prince Gerhard, played by Paul Reubens.
  • The sitcom owes its name to the address of the GE Building in New York, an Art Deco skyscraper and the centerpiece of Rockefeller Center. This building houses the headquarters of NBC Universal.
  • Aside from the main characters and supporting roles whose names appear in the opening credits of each episode, Elaine Stritch, Will Arnett, Chris Parnell, and Dean Winters are the only actors to appear in every season of the sitcom.
  • Father and son Rip Torn and Tony Torn play the Gess father and son, yet they never appear on screen together.
  • The role of Margaret Lemon was offered to actress and comedian Andrea Martin, but she was too busy with the Broadway production of 'Young Frankenstein'—a musical adaptation of Mel Brooks' eponymous 1974 parody comedy—and declined to join the series. Martin later appeared in one episode as Bonnie.
  • In the first season, Jack, played by Alec Baldwin, mentions the series 'Friends' (1994-2004) several times. Baldwin himself played Parker in the eighth season of that show. David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston, who played Ross and Rachel in 'Friends', appeared in '30 Rock' in the second and third seasons, respectively.
