What's left behind the scenes

  • This refers to a US Air Force unit nicknamed the 'Bloody Hundredth' due to the heavy loss of personnel and equipment during combat sorties.
  • Before filming began, the actors in the miniseries spent two weeks at a recruit training camp under the command of a Vietnam War (1955-1975) veteran who had served as a consultant on the military drama 'Band of Brothers' (directed by David Frankel, Mikael Salomon, Tom Hanks, David Leland, Richard Loncraine, David Nutter, Phil Alden Robinson, and Tony To, 2001) and the series 'The Pacific' (2010). The training was largely academic, consisting primarily of lectures on World War II.
  • For the filming of the miniseries, three B-17 bomber models were built from scratch. Two of them were exact replicas, while the third was made slightly larger to provide more space for the film crew inside.
  • During filming, Callum Turner, Austin Butler, Nate Mann, and David Shields played a game that real pilots enjoy. Instead of climbing into the bomber's cockpit using the boarding ladder, they competed to see who could scramble in the fastest using a flip-up climb to get into the cockpit ahead of their comrades.
  • Austin Butler specifically watched footage of Cleven, the man he portrayed in this project. Cleven was already over 80 years old when he spoke about flying the bomber. Watching the footage helped Butler adopt Cleven's manner of speaking and his sense of humor.
