What's left behind the scenes

  • Louis Lester is depicted in the series as a Black leader of an ensemble featuring musicians of different skin colors. While Black musicians did occasionally play with white ensembles in the 1930s, the practice of recruiting racially diverse permanent members did not begin until two decades later.
