What's left behind the scenes

  • Arthur Lowe's (Captain Mainwaring) contract included a clause stating that he would not appear on screen without trousers.
  • In June 2010, a statue of Captain Mainwaring was erected in the Norfolk town of Thetford, where location filming took place.
  • Bill Pertwee warmed up the audience before every recording. He was also the only member of the main cast with stand-up experience.
  • Three episodes from the second season of the sitcom are considered lost.
  • Popular British comedian Bud Flanagan recorded the series' theme song in a single take, despite having the flu. He passed away a few months later in October 1968.
  • Just as in the series, John Laurie and Arnold Ridley served in the Home Guard during World War II.
  • The closing credits, featuring militiamen walking across a smoky battlefield, are a tribute to a scene from the cult war film 'The Way Ahead' (1944).
  • Jon Pertwee and Leonard Rossiter were considered for the role of Captain Mainwaring.
  • The series was originally titled 'Fighting Tigers' until Michael Mills, the head of comedy at the BBC, changed it to 'Dad's Army'.
  • Private Frazer's catchphrase, 'We're doomed!', was conceived by writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft after actor John Laurie complained once again that some aspect of the series was doomed to fail.
