Short description

In cases ripped from the headlines, police investigate serious and often deadly crimes, weighing the evidence and questioning the suspects until someone is taken into custody. The district attorney's office then builds a case to convict the perpetrator by proving the person guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Working together, these expert teams navigate all sides of the complex criminal justice system to make New York a safer place.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Detective Mike Logan's leather coat was not provided by the props department. Actor Chris Noth bought it himself at a thrift store.
  • On some days, Jill Hennessy was unable to participate in filming (for example, during the courtroom scenes), and her sister Jacqueline stood in for her.
  • Before pursuing acting, Dennis Farina, who plays Detective Joe Fontana, worked in the Chicago Police Department for 18 years. He was brought into cinema by his former partner, Chuck Adamson, who had retired and become a police consultant for films and television series.
  • S. Epatha Merkerson wears a wig in the series. The actress decided that her own hairstyle was not quite suitable for the image of the ambitious officer Anita Van Buren.
  • Vanessa Williams auditioned for the role of Assistant District Attorney Abby Carmichael, but the part went to actress Angie Harmon because the series creator, Dick Wolf, liked her Southern accent.
  • Some of the actors in the series played multiple characters. Edward D. Murphy played 12 roles across 12 episodes of the first 10 seasons. Lee Shepherd played 7 characters in 9 episodes across 9 seasons. Isaiah Whitlock Jr. played a man who confessed to murdering children in one episode and a NYPD captain in another; in total, he performed 5 roles in 6 episodes. Dennis Butskaris appeared on screen 7 times between 1990 and 2004. Such actors are referred to as "repeat offenders."
  • By the end of the 5th season, creator and executive producer Dick Wolf decided not to renew Chris Noth's contract, believing that the show could subsequently manage without his character and the character played by Jerry Orbach (1935-2004). A few years later, Noth convinced Wolf to produce a 1998 film about Detective Mike Logan, whose story Noth believed had been prematurely cut short in the series.
