- The virus from the remains of the test monkeys is being grown on a nutrient medium in Petri dishes, although in reality, only bacterial colonies are grown this way. Viruses cannot be grown on nutrient media—only in living cell cultures—because, as obligate parasites, viruses are unable to replicate outside of cells.
