Short description

Laura Holt, a licensed private detective, opens a detective agency but finds that potential clients refuse to hire a woman, however qualified. To solve the problem, Laura invents a fictitious male superior whom she names Remington Steele. Through a series of events that unfold in the first episode, "License to Steele," a former thief and con man, whose real name is never revealed, assumes the identity of Remington Steele. Behind the scenes, Laura remains firmly in charge.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Steel is a great fan of Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957). He possesses five foreign passports under five different names, all of which are characters played by Bogart.
  • Director Chris Columbus is a huge fan of the Bond franchise. He was very disappointed that Pierce Brosnan didn't get the role of Bond because he was filming 'Remington Steele' at the time and was bound by his contract. Columbus himself considered Brosnan a magnificent actor. During the filming of the comedy 'Mrs. Doubtfire' (1993), Columbus told Brosnan that he would have made a wonderful James Bond, to which Brosnan replied that the 'ship had sailed.' In 1995, Columbus received a call from MGM informing him that they were looking for an actor for the role of Bond and that Brosnan was one of the candidates. Columbus actively supported this idea, and Brosnan became the next Bond. Since then, Columbus has considered this his modest contribution to the Bond franchise.
  • It was originally intended that Remington Steele would be a supporting character, serving merely to highlight the female lead played by Stephanie Zimbalist. However, Pierce Brosnan became so popular in the role that his part was significantly expanded.
