What's left behind the scenes

  • Most of the jokes from the series were carried over into 'The Naked Gun' trilogy.
  • In some scenes of the first four episodes of the series, Frank Drebin trips over or runs over various objects. The number of these 'obstacles' in an episode corresponded to the episode's number. This joke does not appear in the final two episodes.
  • John Belushi was intended to be the 'doomed star' in the sixth episode. The episode was filmed, but Belushi passed away shortly after filming, and the scene was cut. In 1991, following the success of 'The Naked Gun', the series was rebroadcast. It was intended that Belushi's episode be inserted into the sixth episode, but for unknown reasons, this was not done. This video clip is now considered lost.
  • Each week, a guest star was invited to the series, whose character would die during the opening credits.
  • The opening sequence accompanying the credits features a scene with Abraham Lincoln fighting off attackers. Pat Proft had intended to replace Lincoln with Mahatma Gandhi wielding a machine gun in the second season.
  • The main musical theme, the opening credits, and Leslie Nielsen's character are a parody of the series "The A-Team" starring Lee Marvin.
  • The ABC network wanted to insert laugh tracks, but the show's producers did not agree to this.
