What's left behind the scenes

  • The names Greg gives to his frog: Kitty, Virt, Virt Jr., George Washington, Mr. President, Benjamin Franklin, Dr. Cucumber, Greg Jr., Skipper, Ronald, and Jason Funderburcher.
  • Patrick McHale came up with the concept for the series in 2004, ten years before its creation.
  • Greg was based on the son of the series creator, Patrick McHale.
  • In the 5th episode, the viewer can see paintings above the dining table in Quincy Endicott's house. One of them had already been featured in the Cartoon Network animated series 'Adventure Time' (2010).
  • It was initially intended that the series would consist of 18 episodes.
  • During the final edit, a scene in which a man makes dice from children's skeletons was cut.
  • Early drafts of the script suggested that Greg would remain in the forest, while Wirt would manage to return home.
  • According to the plot, the brothers enter a mysterious forest on Halloween, and upon returning to the real world, they discover that only a few seconds have passed. It was originally intended that they would only escape the forest by Christmas.
  • The Beast, the series' main antagonist, appears in only 4 episodes.
  • In early drafts of the script, they planned to depict a limbo (a state of uncertainty, sometimes purgatory or even the vestibule of hell) instead of a forest, and the Beast was intended to be a guide for the main characters, helping them return.
  • At the beginning, Lorna is shown sorting through bones. These are the remains of the victims of the evil spirit that possessed her.
  • At the end of the series, Lorna reads the 'Book of the Unknown.' This is also the title of the pilot episode.
  • In episode 9, Greg hides behind Quincy Andicott's headstone.
  • In the second episode, Greg, Virt, and Beatrice pass through Pottsfield—a town full of skeletons. Pottsfield is derived from 'potter's field,' which refers to a cemetery for the poor and vagrants.
