What's left behind the scenes

  • The series creator, Dan Fogelman, really liked Ben Presley's performance at the audition, but his Scottish accent prevented him from getting the role originally intended for him. Presley was already on his way home when he received a call asking him to return and try out for the role of the jester, Steve McKenzie. In the end, he was also entrusted with performing the series' main song.
  • Karen David had hair extensions put in before filming, which took at least an hour and a half. The actress had to leave her hotel at 3:30 AM to be in the makeup chair by 4:00.
  • The actors often had no more than an hour to learn the dance steps before heading onto the set.
  • The songs were recorded before filming, so the actors were given discreet earpieces to stay in time. In some cases, the pre-recorded songs were used in the final version of the series, while in others, the creators preferred the actors' live performances. As for the songs performed by Karen David (who started her career as a pop singer), almost all of them were performed live.
  • The series creator, Dan Fogelman, decided that Timothy Omundson was perfect for the role of King Richard during the very first audition, but the studio executives dreamed of seeing a more famous actor in the part. It took Fogelman five months to convince the bosses.
  • During the year-long break following the release of Season 1, Timothy Omundson completely forgot how to speak with a British accent.
