What's left behind the scenes

  • The first project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to use the word 'nigger'.
  • When it came time to film the basketball game, the show's creators assumed they would need a stunt double for Mercedes 'Misty' Knight, played by Simone Missick. However, it turned out that the actress herself has excellent ball-handling skills.
  • Screenwriter and executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker had hoped to invite Prince to sing in one of the episodes of the first season's finale, but the singer's death on April 21, 2016, thwarted those plans.
  • Mahershala Ali creates musical playlists for every character he portrays on screen. While putting together the collection for Cornell Stokes, he took into account that his character grew up in Harlem, so the playlist includes tracks by artists such as Big L, Diamond D, Brand Nubian, D'Angelo, Mobb Deep, Kanye West, and Erykah Badu.
  • The episode titles of the first season are borrowed from the songs of Gang Starr, a hip-hop duo from Brooklyn.
  • In the fight scenes, Luke Cage delivers non-lethal blows to his opponents. Stunt coordinator James Lew described this style as "pop-fu."
  • The protagonist's skin, once described as "steel-hard," was changed to skin that is "titanium-hard."
  • In one of the episodes, a garbage truck with the word "Timely" on the side is visible on screen. In 1939, magazine publisher Martin Goodman created Marvel Comics as a group of subsidiary companies under the general name Timely Comics.
  • The series' working title was "Tiara." In the comics, Luke Cage wore something resembling a tiara on his head.
  • Before casting Mike Colter as the lead, the show's creators held screen tests with Lance Gross and Cleo Anthony.
  • Thanks to the Netflix service, the series was broadcast in 190 countries.
  • In the 12th episode, a poster urging residents to report known or planned crimes to law enforcement features Stan Lee. He was a writer, actor, producer, TV host, screenwriter, editor, and the creator of numerous comic book characters, as well as the former president and chairman of the board of Marvel Comics.
  • In the episode "Entering the Arena," Luke Cage emerges from the reservoir having gained superhuman abilities. He has steel bands on his arms and head, just as when he first appeared in the comics in 1972.
  • In the 4th episode, Luke Cage takes someone else's yellow shirt and jeans off a clothesline at night. He has steel bands on his arms and head. Luke looks at his reflection and grumbles about his appearance. It was in a yellow t-shirt and jeans that Luke Cage, also known as Power Man, first appeared in Marvel comics in the June 1972 issue.
  • In the 1990s, Quentin Tarantino wanted to make a film called 'Luke Cage: Hero for Hire' starring Laurence Fishburne, but instead made 'Pulp Fiction' (1994).
  • The woman singing at Cornell's 'Shield-Face' club in the second episode is Faith Evans, the widow of Christopher Wallace (known as The Notorious B.I.G.), whose photo hangs in the place of honor in Stokes' office.
  • Luke Cage first appeared in Marvel comics in 1972. Initially, the character was a typical hero of the blaxploitation genre (films targeting a Black urban audience) during a period of American cinema when movies such as 'Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song' (Melvin Van Peebles, 1971) or 'Shaft' (Gordon Parks, 1971) were being released.
  • Some refer to Luke Cage by the nickname Power Man.
  • In the comics, Luke Cage served neither in the police nor in the army; however, the series mentions that he previously worked in law enforcement and served in the Navy.
