What's left behind the scenes

  • To film the car chase involving the Los Angeles Police Department pursuing Simpson in a white Ford Bronco, a section of the I-710 freeway in California was closed for two consecutive weekends.
  • Cuba Gooding Jr. claims that since it remains unclear whether O. J. Simpson was guilty or not by the end of the series, he played the character in one take as if he were guilty and in another as if he were innocent, leaving the final choice to the director.
  • Executive producer Nina Jacobson said that the hardest part was finding an actor for the role of Christopher Darden. Black actors refused to audition for the role because they disliked Darden himself.
  • The premiere of the first season of the series, titled 'The People v. O. J. Simpson,' aired on FX on February 2, 2016. On this same day in 1985, O. J. Simpson officially married Nicole Brown Simpson, whom he divorced two years later and murdered in 1994.
  • Sterling K. Brown once stated that his off-screen relationship with Sarah Paulson bore a striking resemblance to the relationship between their characters in the plot. They also spent a lot of time together before and after work, comparing notes and records and talking about life.
  • In the 7th episode of the 1st season of 'American Horror Story,' Vivienne Harmon, played by actress Connie Britton, is shown the house where Nicole Brown and her associate Ron Goldman were murdered during an improvised tour. Five years later, in the 1st season of the series 'American Crime Story,' Britton played Faye Resnick, a friend of Nicole Brown.
  • Many of the series' scenes were filmed at the Los Angeles Center Studios soundstages.
  • To play the role of Marcia Clark more convincingly, actress Sarah Paulson, who does not smoke in real life, smoked real cigarettes on set.
  • Sarah Paulson did not watch the 1st season upon its release. The actress publicly apologized to Marcia Clark, whom she portrayed, for having to build the character's image based solely on press articles. For the Emmy Award she received for this role, Paulson requested that Marcia Clark's name be engraved on it.
  • Sterling K. Brown, who won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in the series 'American Crime Story', called his real-life counterpart Christopher Darden multiple times, but Darden refused to meet or even speak with the actor. Ultimately, Sterling called Darden's daughter, who agreed to act as a consultant.
  • The scenes near Nicole Simpson's house were filmed on specially constructed sets located near the house where she actually lived. Computer graphics were used to make the sets more closely resemble the original.
  • There were days when Sarah Paulson was filming 'American Crime Story' simultaneously with the fifth season of 'American Horror Story'. She had to switch between characters, sometimes playing one role before she had even taken off the costume from the other. Filming for the courtroom scenes often lasted until 2 a.m.
  • During the filming of the courtroom scenes, a videographer was on set to show the actors footage of the actual O.J. Simpson trial before every take.
  • Sarah Paulson immersed herself so deeply in the role of Marcia Clark that she constantly wore the perfume her character preferred during filming.
  • John Travolta's first appearance in a series since filming the sitcom 'Welcome Back, Kotter' (1975-1979).
  • Cuba Gooding Jr. admitted that playing Simpson was emotionally taxing and that he only fully recovered a month after filming ended.
  • Much of the case material (the series is based on real events)—such as the records of the police officer in charge of the case, conversations between lawyers, etc.—was unavailable to the series creators.
