What's left behind the scenes
- The production of the opening scene cost $3.4 million. It featured 150 cars with a total value of $26 million.
- A budget of $160 million was allocated for 36 episodes of the show, or $4.5 million per episode. This is four times the budget the presenters were given for the production of Top Gear on the BBC. Thus, The Grand Tour can well be called one of the most expensive television shows in history.
- When introducing another episode of Top Gear, James May invariably said the phrase "Oh, damn!" whenever something went wrong. In The Grand Tour, the presenter cannot use these words, as Top Gear has claimed the rights to them. This irritates May greatly, as he is used to mentioning the devil at every convenient opportunity.
- The BBC decided not to renew Jeremy Clarkson's contract after his fight with one of the employees. Other Top Gear presenters and Clarkson's friends, Richard Hammond and James May, chose to leave with him. Amazon Prime immediately seized the opportunity and struck a deal with them. The premiere episode of the show aired on Amazon Video on November 18, 2016.
- All episodes of the show are filmed in 4K format—a resolution in digital cinema and computer graphics that corresponds to approximately 4,000 pixels horizontally.
- The premiere took place in the USA, UK, Japan, and Germany. After December 2016, the show became available to viewers in other countries as well.
- The new test driver in the show is simply called The American. The show has its own racing track, named the "Eboladrome" because its layout resembles the shape of the Ebola virus. The track is located at a former Royal Air Force base near Swindon in the ceremonial county of Wiltshire.
- In the recurring segment "Celebrity Brain Teaser," guest stars are asked to complete a timed lap around the track and try to beat the other participants. Top Gear management stated that if the segments in "The Grand Tour" bore too much resemblance to the BBC program, they would sue for copyright infringement. Due to the threat of legal action, the hosts of "The Grand Tour" arrange for the "death" of the guest stars.
- Each episode shows a guest star being met at the airport. The person waiting holds a small sign with the star's name. The celebrity's surname is invariably misspelled or intentionally distorted.
